Fruitland Elementary School
Fruitland, Idaho
Constructed in 2006 this 73,000 sq. foot new elementary school was the major part of a much needed facility expansion and improvement bond passed by the community. The project also included a new high school band building, remodel and expansion of the gymnasium followed by a remodel of the old elementary school building. This project included T5 high bay fluorescent fixtures in the gym and use of 32 W T8 lamps with electronic ballasts elsewhere. Interestingly, this project also took advantage of the scotopic performance of the 6500 °K lamps but only after staff visited the upgraded New Plymouth High School to see for themselves what “daylight” fluorescents were all about. All those who went for the look see were unanimous in their approval!

This project also took full advantage of available lighting control technology. Teachers and staff really liked the fact they don’t need to concern themselves with light switches unless they wanted to change one of the three selectable lighting levels. District management also liked the fact that should anyone be in the building at night interior lights would be activated providing an added deterrent to any potential school vandals.

Malheur Federal Credit Union
Ontario, Oregon
Now a well established fixture in the City of Ontario this 10,000 + sq. foot facility was constructed in the summer of 2001 by a local General Contractor. This was an energy efficient lighting design that pre dated a lot of the energy codes and other emphasis now placed on sustainable designs. You might say it was energy efficient before that was cool! While lighting controls as we know them today weren’t so prevalent 10 years ago the design did include tri-level light controls throughout the offices and work areas and used indirect lighting in a coffered ceiling arrangement in the lobby. Lighting had to be closely coordinated with the architectural design. Use of T8, 32 W Linear fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts utilized through the design gives the building an easy to live with lighting power foot print. It’s an attractive, comfortable interior and a nice environment to do business in; stop by and check it out if you haven’t already!

New Plymouth High School
New Plymouth, Idaho
In the spring of 2006 a lighting and lighting control upgrade was designed and in stalled for the New Plymouth School District. The job consisted of replacing fluorescent light fixtures with older T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts with energy efficient T8 lamp technology using electronic ballasts. In the process fixtures were able to re-lamped to 32W, T8, 6000 °K lamps and provided occupancy sensors in all areas including hall ways.

This resulted in a little over 30% reduction in lighting energy based on comparison of the original configuration to the new more energy efficient arrangement. With additional savings provided by the improvements in the lighting controls, overall interior lighting energy for the facility was reduced by estimated 50% or more. Idaho Power rebates were applied for and received for both the new lamping and ballast configurations as well as the improved lighting controls.

Staff at the school commented on how bright the class room was after the conversion and went on about the clean, fresh new look of the 6000°K “daylight” T8 lamps. As you can see from the pictures, it’s doing more with less!
